Don’t misses when traveling in the BahamasFor the best breakfast in town visit Charlie's Restaurant, located at the Old Nassau Stadium. The proprietor of Charlie’s is Charlie Major Jr., who is the son of the Bahamas' Father of Boxing, Charlie Major Sr. Besides having the best stew fish in town, a visit to Charlie’s is a step back to the days of boxing's Golden Era. We could practically hear the footsteps of Hall of Fame boxers like Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Sonny Liston and Willie Pep echoing off the walls! Major's stories made us feel as if we were sitting ringside. Looking for an adventure? Don’t miss the Blue Lagoon Dolphin Encounter. Here you will take a short boat ride to an enchanted little lagoon to meet and interact with some of the Bahamas’ most pleasant ambassadors- dolphins and sea lions. Known as one of the top marine parks in its field, Dolphin Encounters Ltd. provides an educational adventure for kids and adults. Looking for hand-made, beautiful, tropical clothes and accessories? Visit with Linda Brown at Bahama Hand Prints. At the facility you can watch as age-old patterns are recreated on cloth, cured, cut to pattern and sewn into stylish fashions for all ages. While two new patterns are developed every year, many of the original patterns created by artists Helen Astarita and Berta Sands are stilled used today. In addition to clothing, home accessories with the Bahama Hand Prints patterns can be found. Ready to really treat yourself? If fine cigars and incredible dining interests you, don’t miss Graycliff. Here you can visit a real cigar factory and learn about the entire cigar making process. After exploring the factory make sure to visit one of the Bahamas most lovely restaurants on the Island. On top of unbelievable food, owner Enrico Garzaroli has built one of the most lavish wine cellars in the world. The restaurant even boast a bottled water menu with more than 100 different selections. Make sure to conclude your evening with homemade ice cream topped with 100-year-old balsamic vinegar - it’s absolutely fantastic. If you’re looking for a more casual dining venue make sure to visit what the locals call "The Fish Fry" or Arawak Cay. Here you will find local culinary fare- make sure you stop at Twin Brothers for a delicious daiquiris (FYI - daiquiris are made both with and without alcohol). Another great must see stop is Johnny Canoe’s, located within the Nassau Beach Hotel. Here you will find colorful indoor and outdoor festive dining with live local music Thursday evening through Sunday evening from 7-midnight. Travel back in time with Nettie Symonette at Nettie's Difference of Nassau, a Bahamian culture museum and hotel. Colorful buildings will catch your attention when driving by and make you want to know more about the facility. However, as beautiful, fun and engaging as the museum is, it shrunk in comparison to Symonette. As she begins telling the tale of her life, one that began in Eleuthera and has brought her to Nassau, you forget that you live in 2007 and imaged life as a young Bahamian in the '40s. While 1940s daily life sounds grueling, her stories inspire the listener to focus on the spirit of the people and the ingenuity of the communities. Travel Tip: The best way to get acquainted with an area is to find a local tour guide and take a ride. Tour Guide Godfrey Simms Nettie's Difference of Nassau and his lovely daughter Nikia took us around the city. |
